How I conquered one of my greatest fears

When I was in my early twenties I played football for a major university. Because of my (perceived status) in the town where I played, I was often asked to speak in public. Getting up in front of even a small group of people was absolutely terrifying to me and I came up with any excuse I could think of to avoid this nightmare. I read several books on the topic and forced myself to face my fear and try my best. Gradually, as I attained more experience and small successes along the way, I got to the point that I could actually tolerate the stress. It has been many years since I first spoke in public and now I can say that I no longer fear and actually enjoy giving presentations or speeches. Facing and conquering this fear has done wonders for my confidence and poise, not only in speaking but in all areas of my life, personal and professional. Now it’s on to sky diving and bungee jumping! Right!

Characteristics of the successful people

Do successful people have specific characteristics? What makes successful people achieve their goals?

We all look for ways to become successful, yet many believe that it is difficult to achieve success. Some possess naturally the characteristics that the successful people have while others learn to acquire those attributes. There are many characteristics that successful people have, however, there are four major ones.

1. Having clear plan and commitment-

If you don’t have a clear plan toward a specific goal and if you are not committed then you will never reach your goals. You first have to know what you want, think of a plan and the time you expect to achieve your goal. The main difference between the successful and unsuccessful is that the first one has a clear plan, while the second doesn’t have a plan and is not committed to his goal.

2. Manage your time-

Time management is one of the most important goals to success. I’m sure you know that the majority of people suffer from lack of time, but the truth is most of us don’t know how to use our time correctly and we tend to live randomly.

3. Prepare for opportunities and take action-

We all get opportunities in life. Some exploit those opportunities very well, however, the majority evade those opportunities because of fear of not doing well. If you get an opportunity in life that you think will help you in achieving your goal, take it and do not run away from it.

4. Self confidence-

Know that it is natural to “fail” many times. Those failed attempts should not affect your confidence in yourself. The problem is that many people give up when they don’t reach their desired goals the first time. You have to overcome those obstacles and start viewing those attempts that you “failed” in them as experiences rather than failing. Do whatever it takes to reach your goals.

Always remember that what George Sheehan said, “Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.”

Overcoming your greatest fear!

As I advise clients across North America about acquiring a new business there is one common thread that joins them together: in order to find and purchase the business of their dreams, they must overcome their fear of failure. This fear manifests itself in different ways: the inability to make decisions; the constant habit of second guessing; formulation of imaginery roadblocks….all of these things add up to procrastination….how do we conquer that gnawing anxiety which keeps us from realizing our goal?

Do you have what it takes to be a successful franchise owner

One of the most important questions every franchise owner has asked is – “Am I the kind of person who will succeed at franchise ownership?”

What, exactly, does it take to be successful?

Only the individual can answer this question completely, but those who have spent a great deal of time in the industry have a pretty good idea what it takes.  The following is a review of Jeff Elgin’s Entrepreneur.com article, “Top 5 Characteristics of Successful Franchisees: Do You Have What It Takes?”  Jeff lists the following five key characteristics:

Risk Aversion:  Believe it or not, successful franchise owners are not Vegas-style gamblers.  Instead, successful owners know how to keep unnecessary risk to a minimum.  They want to have as much control over business outcomes as possible.  Franchisees, more than other business owners, recognize the value of a strong franchise to reduce their risk.  They do their homework so they know what they’re getting into.

System Orientation:  This is where franchisees differ from stereotypical entrepreneurs.  Entrepreneurs do not want to follow someone else’s system for success.  They have an “almost uncontrollable urge to reinvent the wheel based on their incredible confidence in their ability to figure out how things should be done to maximize results.”  On the other hand, franchisees want proven systems.  They don’t want to have to figure out the best way to do something.  Give them a proven system and let them go.

Coachability: Franchisees are adept at learning from others.  They are card-carrying members of the “When in doubt – ask” club.  They are willing to acknowledge they don’t know everything and that it’s better to learn from others’ mistakes than to make unnecessary errors.

Hard-work Affinity: There is a particular attitude that is prevalent among successful franchisees – the attitude that says, “Whatever it takes to get the job done.”  It means accepting the fact that hard work will be necessary and may involve long hours.

Strong People Skills: Dealing effectively with employees and customers is necessary for any business, including a successful franchise.  Having the necessary people skills to foster loyalty, value and trust is an extremely important characteristic – perhaps the most important skills.

If you can be honest with yourself to compare your personality with these five characteristics, you’ll know whether you have what it takes to be a successful franchise owner.  If you match up to these characteristics, you are an excellent candidate for success in the franchise world.
